Rails Logo (Republished)

UPDATEWe’ve received increased traffic due to the release of Ruby on Rails 2.2 and the community wanting a new logo to celebrate the update to the framework. We have republished the original post to make it easier to find on our site.

The time has come to give the Ruby on Rails framework a new insignia. We have heard many people mention how awful the official Ruby on Rails logo is, so we decided (like most things) to take the matter into our own hands. Today, New Leaders is presenting the first version of a copyright-free logo for the framework. We have created a new website and hosted all of the source files for you to download and work with. We are going to treat the new logo as if it was official, and we hope that you will, too.

We received some feedback from the first incarnation of the Rails Logo. The reaction is that it is “good” and a better alternative to the existing mark. It will require further refinement to be perfect. Consider this version 1.0, and we’ll continue to refine the symbol over time until it meets both our and our audience’s expectations. If you love or hate it, feel free to tell us your opinion below. We appreciate the honesty. If you have the design skills, feel free to download the source files and adjust them to meet your own expectations. If you ultimately build on top of what we created and you feel it worthy enough to be the next version, please share it with us.

A Better Rails Logo – The Rails Logo (as used at the head of this post) was created by Kevin Milden and is distrubuted under the BY-ND Creative Commons License. This makes it a lot cooler than the “official” Rails logo which is trademarked and, well, you can’t use without getting approval from the top.
