New business idea
This halloween, I tried looking for a number of high end costumes of well-known super heroes or characters from my favorite movies. Beyond the amazing work of fans to create replicas, most are dime store crap. You can choose between being a pirate, a scary mask, Zorro, or a cowboy.
So here is my idea: A Todd McFarlane quality costume company that produces attire in the price range of $500 – $1,000. High quality replicas could include Batman, Ironman, Spawn, Stormtroopers, Robocop, and so on. I have a hunch that once the initial prototype is created that it really couldn’t cost more than $200 in plastic to produce each suit. For me, I could invest in my favorite character and be that every year, or buy a brand new costume every Halloween to add to my collection of replica armor. Impractical? Absolutely. Sell like hot cakes? You betcha.
Someone out there please save us from the crap quality costumes made for kids, and make something that we would want to collect and enjoy for many years to come.

We would need to find someone who can actually prototype the costumes. The Ironman suit worn above was a $2,000 investment by the creator and that doesn’t include his time. The other trick is being able to license the characters from the copyright holders. Being so close to Hollywood we could certainly locate the talent and it would be pretty easy to get the license. Both require capital. I would say a couple hundred thousand dollars would get you a few initial prototypes, business plan and web marketing together to convince both licensees to let you do it for a percentage of sales. It is doable. Even just planning it out without spending the money could prove valuable.
The real problem is that I would want to dress like a super hero most of the time. Weird? Certainly. Awesome? Fuck yes.

Here you go mate, all the way from the UK – although the Iron Man costume on this site isn’t as good as the one above – www.joke.co.uk/showPart_large.asp?part=23045

@Mike — The U.K. apparently has it shit together when it comes to costuming. Thanks for the link I think I am going to dress like a Jedi from here on out.
